Electronic Warfare And The Ramming Of The USS Fitzgerald

According to the current operational theory of Japanese investigators, the deadly collision between USS Fitzgerald (DDG-62) and the Philippine-flagged merchant ship ACX Crystal knocked out the destroyer’s communications for an hour, while the four-times-larger merchant ship was unaware of what it hit until it doubled back and found the damaged warship, two sources familiar with the ongoing Japanese investigation told USNI News on Wednesday. - U.S. Navel Institute

"The crew of the guided-missile destroyer that was struck by a merchant ship on Friday off the coast of Japan fought to save the ship for an hour before the first calls went out for help, Japanese investigators now believe." - USNI

But The Above Statement, Pardon The Pun, Doesn't Hold Water Unless The Ship Was Dead In The Water Disabled By The Container Vessel.

There may be more to this story, understanding that a crew, not unlike the 1912 sinking of the Titanic, would first immediately report their ship was in danger and then quickly as possible assess the damage to make any possible repairs. They wouldn't wait one hour and then call for help, especially in 2017 105 years later.

But in the case of the USS Fitzgerald, its electronics could have instead been knocked out by another nearby vessel equipped with a trial electronic weapons (EW) system on board while posing as a container ship. The Fitzgerald's crew would then be unable to report the incident. This would give the freighter time to try to sink the disabled war vessel once it was verified it was no longer operational and dead in the water, unable to contact anyone. Photos of the damage of the two ships shows that the container vessel did not glance off the Fitzgerald. Instead it looks like an intended direct hit to split the U.S. destroyer in two, putting her on the bottom in minutes with no radio to report she was going down. Watch video below.
