"A decade-long Homeland Security Department effort to better secure America’s shipping ports from terrorism using biometric identification cards has been so bungled that lawmakers should consider other alternatives, a congressional watchdog reports.
The report this week from the Government Accountability Office questioning the Transportation Worker Identification Credential initiative is the latest to find significant flaws in Homeland Security’s efforts to use advanced technology to better fortify the country since the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks.
The TWIC program was supposed to provide a tamper-resistant biometric ID card to maritime workers, granting them unescorted access to secure areas in ports and maritime facilities. "Jesse Daniels, 53, is accused of endangering the welfare of children for the actions he took after catching four boys in the act of vandalizing his father-in-law’s home over the weekend. With extensive damage done to the inside of the house, Daniels and his wife called 911 — and he went inside of the residence to confront the boys.
But that’s not all: Daniels put the kids inside of a closet while he waited for authorities to arrive. It was this latter action that created an even bigger legal conundrum.
The vandalism unfolded in Clyde, New York, a small town between between Rochester and Syracuse. Daniels lives next door to the home — his father-in-law’s residence that is under continued renovation — and when he heard noises and saw the lights on, he knew something was wrong." . . . Read More

7. Syria's Islamists Seize Control As Moderates Dither
Obama’s support of rebels in Syria suddenly causes division within rebels, radical fundamentalists pushing moderates out of the picture within 24 hours.
"As the Syrian civil war got under way, a former electrician who calls himself Sheikh Omar built up a brigade of rebel fighters. In two years of struggle against President Bashar al-Assad, they came to number 2,000 men, he said, here in the northern city of Aleppo. Then, virtually overnight, they collapsed.
Omar's group, Ghurabaa al-Sham, wasn't defeated by the government. It was dismantled by a rival band of revolutionaries - hardline Islamists.
The Islamists moved against them at the beginning of May. After three days of sporadic clashes Omar's more moderate fighters, accused by the Islamists of looting, caved in and dispersed, according to local residents. Omar said the end came swiftly.
The Islamists confiscated the brigade's weapons, ammunition and cars, Omar said. 'They considered this war loot. Maybe they think we are competitors,' he said. 'We have no idea about their goals. What we have built in two years disappeared in a single day.'" . . . Read More

10. Supreme Court: States Can't Require Proof Of Citizenship To Vote Using Federal Form
"The Supreme Court ruled today in Arizona v. Inter Tribal Council that federal law does not allow states the option of requiring voters to prove they are American citizens when they register to vote." – Breitbart
"Writing for the 7-2 majority, Justice Antonin Scalia began, 'To be eligible to vote under Arizona law, a person must be a citizen of the United States. This case concerns Arizona’s efforts to enforce that qualification.' He noted that Arizonans adopted Proposition 200, under which voters must, 'present proof of citizenship when they register to vote and to present identification when they vote on election day.'
Prop 200 requires election officials to 'reject any application for registration that is not accompanied by satisfactory evidence of United States citizenship.' Such evidence could be a passport, birth certificate, or anything else accepted under federal law. Scalia noted that the Federal Form requires you to certify under penalty of perjury that you are a citizen, but need not prove it.
Scalia wrote that the issue in this case is 'whether the federal statutory requirement that States ‘accept and use’ the Federal Form pre-empts Arizona’s state-law requirement that officials ‘reject’ the application of a prospective voter who submits a completed Federal Form unaccompanied by documentary evidence of citizenship.'" . . .
